FootBall Fun and Fantasy

Although our hosts Chan Dara Paschal and Steven Zhou do not know anything about football, America has a love affair with the sport. Today we showcase two football stars-one a high school senior whose underdog team went all the way to the state championships and a professional football player who played for the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49’ers, and the Washington Red Skins.
Both advocate dedication, hard work, putting in the time, showing up, and getting the good grades to be successful.

Being on powder puff football team and being head cheerleader for four years in high school, Cynthia Brian, shares her experience with the sport was and also her first meeting with the pros when she was on The Dating Game.

Born in New York and living in Moraga since the age of four, Mason Windatt is a junior at Campolindo High School. He has been active in sports since childhood and was a star on his Cougar team this year as they won the NCS division 3 title and was the runner up in the division 3 State Championship. A highlight of his football career to date was the big game at the Oakland Coliseum. Read about the big game.

Professional football athlete, Demetric Evans, shares his success secrets to getting recruited by the Dallas Cowboys, 49’ers, and Redskins. He grew up in a small town in the south where football was a method to be violent without getting arrested. With discipline and practice his dreams of a pro life with millions of dollars followed. Today he is a stay-at-home dad, married to a beautiful woman who is an OB/GYN with a 10 month old baby and works as a sportcaster for ESPN.

Field reporter, Vivien Lee, has us laughing on the sidelines with her Say What! Segment filled with funny football trivia. Do you know how many pigs it takes to make a pigskin? Tune in and play in our game today on football fantasies and fun.

“Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page!” Henry Ward Beecher

Over the holidays, our family engaged in our revered tradition of watching family videos on Christmas Eve. How quickly we forget what we looked like, talked about, wore, and how we acted one, two, three, or more decades ago! Every year we look forward to this ritual filled with laughter, cheers, jeers, and tears as we meander down memory lane. Perhaps because I was in the movie business, or perhaps because I didn’t want to miss a moment of my children’s youth or the changes in my garden, it appears I lived with a video camera at the ready. Everything from pulling weeds and planting seeds, to my kids rescuing ducks, deer, goats, and dogs was captured on celluloid.

The one central theme that stood out throughout the years of filming was that we are an outdoor family. I was blessed with farmer parents who lived their lives in the fields and I fostered this love of time in nature in my own offspring. Today, kids are bombarded with so many technological gadgets, that it’s hard to get them unplugged and outside. Instead of medication for hyperactivity, we exercised our excessive energy with building forts, hanging tree swings, and running through the hills pretending to be explorers. Now, more than ever, every family needs to start with a fresh page of al fresco renewal.

According to the Mayan calendar, 2012 portends the end of the world as we know it. Being a history major taught me that although it is important to learn from the past, it is up to us to forge our futures. Every January we have the opportunity to begin anew. I predict that 2012 is the beginning of an era of awakening and starting fresh. With that thought in mind, my gift to readers this year will be improved health in body, mind, and spirit with regular tips on how you and your family can discover the wonders of the natural world by getting outside with unstructured open-air activities to allow the imagination to run wild and creativity to soar.

Whether it’s pruning roses or walking in the woods, by exchanging screen time for green time, your internal clock will regulate your body to be alert during the day and tired at night. Numerous studies show that gardening fights obesity as well as sleep deprivation by offering a full body work out that builds strong muscle mass while improving cognitive skills, providing relaxation, increasing stress reduction, and developing deeper sleep patterns.

This year, let’s plan and plant our meals for year-round plot to plate, potager to pot, patch to platter originality. Put in peas, kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, lettuces, and Bok Choy to reap the riches of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals, low in calories and packed with nutrients every body craves. When we teach kids how to grow their own dinners, we introduce them to a whimsical wonderful world of wellness and wealth through the joys of garden sowing and harvesting.

Let 2012 be the year that you tap into the power of plants, grow your own food, and nurture your natural instinct to bond with the land. By being mindful of our fragile earth connection, we restore balance to our neighborhoods and community. It’s time to get off the couch, power down the phones and computers, turn off the flat screen, and let our surround sound be that of the chirping birds, howling winds, and trickling creeks.

Get up, get out, and get dirty. It’s Digging Deep time and we’re starting fresh. Welcome to a bright new year.

Happy Gardening to You!

“Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.” Oren Arnold

The season for holiday gift gathering began for our family in the summer. It was then that we picked the peaches, pears, apricots, berries, and a cornucopia of vegetables to can and give to friends and relatives for Christmas. My sisters and I gathered wild flowers and colorful leaves which we pressed between wax paper creating our own version of stained glass windows. In November we would decorate the jars, adding hand drawn labels, and in December the baking would begin. Wooden boxes would be filled with candied and savory walnuts from our trees, wine from our grapes, preserves from our orchards, eggs from our chickens, garlicky tomato sauce from our gardens, and spiced cookies from our imagination. After collecting miniature pinecones from around the yard to mold into reusable ornaments, the packages were festooned with fanciful yarns, colorful ribbons, and a hearty greeting to be delivered with a smile. Every recipient received a present specifically designed with items we knew they’d enjoy. We all felt as jolly as St. Nick himself.

Over the years commercialism has taken over the season of giving. It’s easy to zip into a store to purchase presents and have them wrapped and shipped. It’s even less hassle to go on-line to order something for everyone on Santa’s list. Yet, somehow, I am still drawn to the love, thought, and sweet individuality that handcrafted gifts exude. I enjoy meandering through my garden contemplating the gifts that are hidden within its boundaries and branches. Who will be the fortunate beneficiary of these heavenly delights? With the return to the earth movement in full swing, this December is the right time for you to employ a personalized home grown holiday.

Instead of cutting down a tree, start by purchasing a living evergreen that you can save in the pot for next year or if you have the space, plant for posterity. Let nature’s winter wardrobe of berries and boughs inspire your holiday decorating. Evergreen trees with colorful berries include Chinese holly with yellow berries; English holly with red berries, North American native red cedar with fragrant foliage and frosty blue berries; and Brazilian peppertree with red peppercorns that are piquant in savory dishes. A deciduous merry berry tree that bears pink and aqua colored fruits is the pistache, a favorite food of squirrels, birds, and turkeys. If you have pines, redwoods, or other conifers in your yard, cut branches to weave into wreaths, centerpieces, and garlands, along with pinecones, dried flowers, mushrooms, or other natural reeds. Decorate outdoor trees with strings of popcorn, cranberries, and rose hips that the birds will enjoy.

While poinsettias, paper whites, jams, jellies, and kitchen treats are always welcome, a few trouble-free gift-giving ideas inspired by the garden include:
⎫ Holiday Napkin Rings made from bendable twigs
⎫ Fragrant Potpourri
⎫ Bay Leaf Garlands
⎫ Rose Petal Sachets
⎫ Lavender Bath Salts
⎫ Aromatherapy Oils
⎫ Apple-Clove Pomanders
⎫ Herbed Olive Oil
⎫ Pinecone Fire Starters
⎫ Pressed Flower Greeting Cards
⎫ Seed Catalog Journals
⎫ Grapevine Wreaths
⎫ Herbal Teas
⎫ Infused Vinegars
⎫ Potted Candles
⎫ Terrariums
⎫ Forced Bulbs in Glass Vases
⎫ Seeds from your Favorite Specimens
⎫ Birdseed Balls

How-to lessons are ubiquitous on the internet. Other great garden offerings available at your favorite garden center are high quality tools, aprons, solar lights, pots, indoor plants, wind chimes, botanical art, gazing balls, and garden books. (My book, Chicken Soup for the Gardener’s Soul, is still a best seller for all those who love nature with autographed copies available from my office, 925-377-STAR.) Besides the hand made riches from my children, my favorite gifts over the years have included hay, soil, shovels, plants, pruning shears, gloves, buckets, fertilizers, hats, chain saws, birdbaths, fountains, and other gardening necessities. Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruits would be as delighted as I am with the bonus of home made pastries, jams, pie filling, and condiments from the fields of friends and family.

For a hoe, hoe, hoe holiday sparkle, plant memories and grow green with aesthetically arresting home grown gifts from your garden that really show you care and share.

Reuse, refresh, recycle, rejuvenate, and rejoice. Wishing everyone a splendid home grown holiday of celebration and gratitude for all our blessings. We’ll reconnect next year!

Happy Gardening to You.

Cynthia Brian has been coaching young people for over twenty years and is the Founder and Executive Director of Be the Star You Are!® charity which works to empower women, families, and youth. (http://www.bethestaryouare.org) With several of the teen volunteers, she launched a web site called Express Yourself!™ (http://www.BTSYA.com) specifically to promote and publish the creative works of young people. When Perry Damone, Director of Voice America Kids visited this new website, he was inspired to ask Cynthia if she would be willing to create a radio show of the same name utilizing the talents of adolescents. As the editor of TEEN SCENE for newspapers, she had been working perfecting the writing of teens and jumped at the opportunity to give youth a bigger voice around the globe. It took a couple of months of preparation, pre-production, and coaching. Today Express Yourself!™ TEEN radio is a reality.

Get ready for our adolescent fusion of originality and inventiveness. Tune in and come play with us on Express Yourself!™

Tune in every Tuesday at NOON PT/3PM ET at the Voice America Kids Network,

Join Cynthia Brian and Heather Brittany on Starstyle®-Be the Star You Are!® every week from 3-4pm PT/6-7pm ET on World Talk Radio for an hour of power, inspiration, empowerment, and fun.
Have you ever asked yourself why you are on planet Earth? And what the ultimate purpose for your life might be? Over dinner Jack Canfield recounted a vision to his friend Bill Gladstone and together they penned the Golden Motorcycle Gang—a gang whose intent is to have fun, but also to make significant contributions to the well-being of humanity. Get ready for the ride of your life when Bill joins us to launch the adventure!
School for Startups by Jim Beach, David Beasley, and Chris Hanks argues that entrepreneurship is not about risk or creativity. Seventy-two percent of Americans wish they were entrepreneurs. When this seventy-two percent of people see that risk and creativity can be removed, no excuse remains for inertia. Jim Beach joins us to share the breakthrough course that guarantees small businesses success in 90 days or less.

Should teens be given an allowance? Is it a good idea to start working while young? How are kids spending their money and how much do they know about financial literacy? Cynthia Brian and Heather Brittany share their opinions on work ethics, teen entitlement and the power of the buck from the chapter, The Gift of Financial Literacy, in the book, Be the Star You Are!® for TEENS.

Over the course of fifty-two weeks, author Amber Karlins places herself in fifty-two anxiety-riddled situations, including a stand-up comedy competition, a fire-eating lesson, an up-close and personal alligator encounter, and an evening spent alone in a haunted hotel. The result is a book, My Year of Living Fearlessly with hilarious misadventures, heart palpitations and triumphs that not only remind her who she is, but also what we can accomplish when we refuse to allow fear and insecurities to define who we are and what we can do.

Imagine it! Research it! Plan It! Finance it!- these are the 4 steps and woman needs to start up her own entrepreneurial venture. sounds easy, but is it? Join Cynthia and Heather as they explain tools of the trade and how you’ll use them to launch your dream.

Why are we firing great teachers and keeping the bad ones? Cynthia Brian looks at tenure, the teacher’s unions, and discusses how we can change the brain drain from happening in America. Our children deserve a great education and we have the ability to give it to them. Cynthia also reads from Be the Star You Are!® for TEENS.

“Let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vines flourish, whether the tender grape appear, and the pomegranates bud forth. There I will give thee my love.”
Song of Solomon 7:12

Growing up in the vineyards of Napa County, all our grapes had been hand picked and hauled to the winery crushers by this time of year. Our hands and feet were stained purple and on the warmest days, our special treat was a swim in the water filled grape tanks reeking of fermentation. October was the beginning of walnut season when my dad shook the trees with a self-fabricated arm attached to the Ford tractor while we children kneeled in the dirt clods tossing the falling nuts into five gallon buckets for sorting at the dehydrator barn. By the end of the month, we celebrated with a harvest hootenanny. Our hands were now stained green, our knees were brown, and undaunted, our feet tapped the two- step.

It’s late September and my backyard grapes are just beginning to color. The Pinot Noir exhibit a blush of purple tint, but no sweetness. The berries are full, the leaves bright, yet despite recent hot days, even my table grapes, Thompson seedless, Muscat, and Rieber are not ready for consumption. The only sweet, juicy grapes dangling from my arbor are aptly named, Sweetwaters. (I’m munching on them as I write.) The vineyards where I grew up have only recently delivered Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc to the Napa Valley wineries. The Merlot, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon await picking, with their sugar levels near perfect. Because of the odd weather conditions of the year, the yield is small.

Lamorinda boasts a rich grape growing precedent with a 125 year-old history. The Lamorinda Wine Growers Association, (www.LamorindaWineGrowers.com) dedicated to sustainable farming and community building, is re-establishing the areas love of the vine and wine along with our pleasant pear past. Although local grape growers are experiencing late ripening crops, Sal Captain of Captain Vineyards in Moraga who farms 3500 vines, the largest amount in Lamorinda, told me that production this year is better than when the season started. His wife, Susan Captain, is the President of LWGA. One of the missions of the organization is to increase resident membership as well as have Lamorinda designated as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). Prominent appellations add value and eminence in wine circles.

The varietals grown throughout Lafayette, Orinda, and Moraga span the French Bordeaux area with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot to the Rhone regions’ Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Viognier. Burgundy is represented by the Pinot Noir grape and Lamorindans also grow small amounts of Sangiovese and Chardonnay. The smallest LWGA member grower tends 20 vines. Numerous amateur gardeners dabble in viticulture and could benefit from becoming a member of a lively grass roots wine region development. Despite the small quantity of bunches, growers talk about the great expectation of a high quality wine production. Will 2011 become known as collectible vintage year?

Last year at this time, I was privileged to visit the gardens of Giverny and the vineyards of the Loire. The wisdom I have savored since growing up in a wine area and living in France as a student at the University of Bordeaux is that gardening and grapes meld cultures, break barriers, and entertain conversation and connection.

Fall is upon us as the harvest days begin. Naturally there is more to do in the autumn garden besides tend to our vineyards, even if you never met a glass of wine you didn’t enjoy! Whether Mother Nature surprises us with warm or cold weather, this is an optimal time to fertilize and augment the soil. Because temperatures will be getting cooler as days get shorter, the nutrients in fertilizers can do their job to balance growth in roots and shoots.

Tomatoes took a long time to ripen this the summer, and now gardeners are reaping bushels of ripe, juicy produce. Be vigilant in harvesting your zucchini, cucumbers, melons, eggplants, carrots, kale, and beans before a cold spell hits. If you are ready to prepare your potager or vegetable garden for the following year, stop watering which will encourage your plants to push for that final crop before withering. Cut back your tomato bushes, toss them in the compost bin, and fry those green tomatoes which will not continue ripening once frost hits.

Leaves are starting to turn colors and flutter to the ground. Rake them and put them in the compost pile to amend your soil in a few months. With the dazzling, captivating, changing colors of the foliage, take photos of a tree or bush in your garden from the same angle every day to chronicle the evolution of nature.

If you are installing or repairing a lawn, October is a prime month to get the job done. Are you seeking the perfect pristine lawn seed? Many of you emailed me if such a discovery existed after last month’s Lawn Ranger column. Since Halloween is this month, I saved this announcement as it may be so scary that you’ll be calling your mummy! The USDA approved a new genetically modified Kentucky Bluegrass from Monsanto this past July that is engineered to resist weed sprays like Roundup. Targeted for golf courses, opponents argue that this new GMO weed-free lawn may cause birth defects. Since perfection is not my plight and I am neither a golfer or pregnant, I’ll let you decide if this development is a dream come true or a hellish nightmare!

Enjoy the rustling of the autumn leaves, the wine from the vine, the changing of the color guard, and the final bounty from your garden efforts. Howl at the harvest moon as Halloween is around the corner .Star gaterhing willow twigs for your magic wands and bewitching herbs to brew dervish drinks. The holidays will be upon us soon, but for now, we can chant merrily, “fall la la la la.”

Cynthia Brian’s Gardening Guide for October

“Autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together, a time of sowing.” Edwin Way Teale

October is not only about ghosts, ghouls, goblins, and gremlins. We harvest our dreams with fall clean-up and spring preparation. Birds pecking at your lawn are not eating it. They are dining on insects that could be harmful to your lawn. The birds, even the crows featured Hitchcock classic, The Birds, are your friends indicating that your lawn has an invader. Clover is a positive plant in the garden and lawn because it grabs oxygen from the air and stores it in the soil. Vegetables to plant now for winter harvest include turnips, spinach, lettuces, arugula, cress, mustard, leeks, radishes, kale, Swiss chard, beets, cauliflower, and broccoli.

DIG and divide iris rhisomes in October. Make sure to keep a few inches of the leaves on the stems and bury the roots two inches deep, eighteen to twenty inches apart.
PULL weeds before they go to seed. Do not put weeds with seedpods on the compost pile unless you want a yard filled with unwanted visitors next spring.
EXPERIMENT by planting a variety of lettuces to keep your salads fresh all season. You can even plant in a pot on a sunny windowsill and snip often. Clip the micro greens as they sprout for delicate, delicious delights.
CONTROL black spot and powdery mildew on roses with non=toxic Serenade with the active ingredient, Bacillus subtilis, a soil bacterium that discourages plant fungi.
TUNE up your garden by pruning back overgrown shrubs, adding a new pathway, or enlarging a cutting area.
ENROLL in a course on edible gardening, native plants, or composting.
AMEND your hard clay soil with large amounts of compost.
INSTALL a hedge to add structure, privacy, and definition to your landscape. Decide whether you want deciduous specimens such as lilac, forsythia, or cranberry bush, or evergreens like privet, boxwood, or holly.
PRUNE your berry bushes, including summer raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries by removing dead canes, thinning new canes, weeding around the plant, then mulching with wood chips to keep the weeds out, nutrients in.
PROPOGATE perennials for free by taking root cuttings now through December as the plants go dormant. Dig up a clump, cut several firm, healthy roots. Trim into two or three inch sections making sure to remember which end is up. Plant either in pots or directly in the ground. Good choices include asters, Oriental poppies, acanthus, primulas, phlox, and rudbeckias.
REPAIR birdhouses so that overwintering birds such as bluebirds, chickadees, and nuthatches will have a warm, safe, cozy place to rest during the upcoming cold nights.
INCREASE bird feeders in your yard as birds consume more food in fall and winter.
SUPPORT local viticulture by joining the Lamorinda Wine Growers Association. The monthly meetings include libations. For information visit http://www.lamorindawinegrowers.com/
WALK in nature when you feel stressed to kick up your cognitive performance. A stroll through a park, a jog around the Lafayette Reservoir, or a simple skip through your back yard will do wonders for your mental fatigue.
SAVE seeds from your favorite annuals, herbs, and vegetables by gathering, drying, labeling, and storing. I love to pick the seed pods from fennel stalks, dry them on a cookie sheet, place in an airtight jar and use for seasoning fish, fruit, salads, soups, and savories all winter.
IMPROVE your health by adding apples and squash to your diet this month.
RESCUE honeybees from water sources when they have fallen in. These workers have pollination duties to complete before the winter storms.
EXPLORE the nursery aisles to plan your purchases of your spring flowering bulbs including tulips, daffodils, muscari, narcissi, hyacinths, frittilaria, Dutch iris, alliums, and lilies. Tulip bulbs need to be refrigerated (not frozen) for at least six weeks before planting.
ROAST seeds from squash and pumpkins by first cleaning, drying, soaking in salted water, then baking at 375 degrees until golden brown.
ENSURE adequate root growth before frost by planting your favorite garlic varieties. Mulch but don’t allow cloves to be soggy wet or they will rot.
TIE dried corn stalks together to add to your front door fall décor.
HARVEST the remainder of ripe produce before the end of the month-apples, Asian Pears, peppers, Swiss chard. Eat the last of your fresh-from-the-vine tomatoes then freeze or can the rest. Stop watering your summer crops to force last minute produce to ripen.
TOAST the full moon with a glass of Lamorinda produced wine! Wishing you grape adventures.

Happy Gardening to YOU!

With her wonderful sense of humor, marvelously candid voice, and astonishing perception, Ephron weaves together insightful, profound and just plain funny stories of her life to form a portrait of a woman’s experiences from childhood through young adulthood, marriage, divorce (and remarriage) and everything in between.
